Good news about fees

March 27, 2020

We have some good news! RCC has decided to waive all distance learning fees for the spring 2020 term. Students who have already paid this fee for spring term will be refunded.

We've received questions about the distance learning fee, which is typically $10 per credit for online classes. Although it may seem like online classes "should be" less expensive than in-person classes, it can be costly for the institution. Delivering courses using Blackboard and video conferencing requires network upgrades, software and equipment, ADA compliance, staff time and training, and extended hours for technical support. The distance learning fee helps the college cover these expenses.

However, during this most unusual time, RCC is proud to be able to support our mission and assist our community in accessing education. It's the right thing to do.

Be sure to read the schedule carefully! There is an important distinction students should be aware of when registering for courses. Two distance options are now available:

  1. Blackboard-only web classes allow for flexible schedules. Times for Blackboard-only classes will be listed TBA.
  2. Zoom classes will meet face-to-face at scheduled times through video conferencing (Zoom) in addition to using Blackboard. Meeting days/times will be listed on the class schedule.

Another important note: Computer labs will be opening — with social distancing and deep cleaning rules strictly adhered to — at the Redwood and Riverside campuses on Monday, March 30 for students who want help with the Blackboard environment. Course materials will not be available until April 6.
