Credit for Prior Learning-Industrial Welding

If you work in the industrial welding, fabrication or related field, you may be able to obtain credit that can be applied to the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Welding Technology. Credit can be granted based on successful completion, demonstration or proof of accredited welding certifications, inservice training, and continuing education activities in addition to regular college coursework. These trainings and certifications often are identical in content and proficiency requirements to content taught in RCC classes and are reflective of skill performance and mastery. As such, students may be able to earn up to 22 credits that can be applied to the AAS degree.

Welding faculty have reviewed the national standards of The American Welding Society (www.aws.org) typically dealing with structural codes involved with buildings and bridges, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (www.asme.org) typically dealing with boiler and pressure vessel codes, and the American Petroleum Institute (www.api.org) typically dealing with pipeline welding codes for the gas and oil industries as well as the requirements for certification in Oregon. Faculty have determined that the training and/or experience required for earning the certifications substantially satisfies RCC course content and outcomes for certain welding core requirements. If you have completed and been awarded specific nationally-recognized welding certificates, up to 22 credits may be granted.

For students who have completed American Welding Society (AWS) and/or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) certifications: If you hold valid certificates for the types of Oregon certifications listed below, you may receive credit by completing the following:

  • Provide proof of completion of at least 24 credits toward RCC's Associate of Applied Science degree in Industrial Welding Technology.
  • Provide documentation noting successful completion of specific welding certifications.

The cost of awarding this type of credit is just $10 per credit. Contact Todd Giesbrecht, Welding Department chair, at 541-245-7825 or at tgiesbrecht@roguecc.edu for more information.
