Ospreys athletics seasons postponed until spring

The fall sports season has been delayed until spring for the Rogue Community College Ospreys. The RCC athletics program includes men's and women's soccer as well as women's volleyball, all sports typically played in the fall.

On July 9, the Northwest Athletic Conference announced a plan to move the majority of fall sports to winter or spring terms for the 2020-2021 school year to protect the safety of student-athletes and slow the spread of COVID-19.

In response to the NWAC decision, RCC has canceled all voluntary summer workouts. The offseason program has been rescheduled to begin Sept. 15.

The men's and women's soccer official preseason is set to begin Feb. 3 with the regular season kicking off March 3. Volleyball preseason is slated to begin Feb. 27 with regular season set to begin March 27. Championships are scheduled for June 4-6.

"While it is unfortunate news that our fall sports have been postponed, the decision was made with the best interest in mind for student-athletes, staff and all people involved with athletics," RCC Athletics Director Darren Van Lehn said. "We will move forward and prepare for the academic year as we always have. And when the time comes to start an offseason program, we will be ready and will have a process in place to support the safety and wellbeing of everyone."

When they got the news, Van Lehn advised players and coaches to look at this as a moment of opportunity. "For the first time, we will be allowed to practice and prepare for months versus weeks, and to establish our community before we have the pressure of the season," he said. "We will stand by our values of hard work, integrity, respect and ambition, and be ready when the time comes.”
