RCC Board Approves Construction of New Science Building

The Rogue Community College Board of Education voted unanimously at a special, public meeting on Feb. 2 to change language in the bond document to reflect a decision to construct a new science building on the Redwood Campus in Grants Pass. The change was needed to ensure a matching grant from the state.

In 2018, the Oregon Legislature approved a $6 million matching grant to go with $5 million in bond funds for the science building. By making the decision on Saturday to do new construction, the college was able to submit the language for the matching grant in SB 5505 by a Feb. 4 deadline. Curtis Sommerfeld, Vice President of College Services, submitted the decision to the legislature on Monday, Feb. 4.

"We are excited about the decision," said RCC President Cathy Kemper-Pelle. "The new science building will be a great resource for our students and a keystone to the future of Redwood Campus."

Though the board has agreed to pursue new construction, RCC will need to develop a long-term master plan for the campus before moving forward on design, site location and construction. Estimated project completion is 2022.
